sometimes i still wonder if you cry yourself to sleep
and in the intoxicated wasteland that are your thoughts,
i wonder if you still think of me.

there’s not a day that goes by that i don’t feel you looming over me
a shadow that i beg to be set free
so that one day i may stand tall again

you are the taste of liquor in my throat
burning, but my body begs for more
you are the thick smoke of a cigarette,
suffocating and sour

usually i like to straighten up the messes i’ve made
but darling, i’m so entangled in your web of lies,
i couldn’t leave even if i tried

The author's comments:

This poem was inspired by the loss of my best friend. She and I used to be so inseparable, but we haven't spoken in months. She changed schools and cut all other ties with me. I mourn her loss despite that she was a terrible, self-centered friend. Although we can try to forget about each other, I know that neither of us will be able to forget all of the years that we spent together. Maybe one day, I'll stop feeling such sorrow over a girl that isn't really gone.
