The Social Dilemma is a documentary that explains how companies use technology to manipulate people to absorb their attention. In the documentary, former employees of technology companies talk about their concerns for the dangerous impact social networking can have on people. A lot of them believe it started the complete opposite way, Technology was used for a lot of good. Like one of the employees stated, “It’s easy today to lose sight of the fact that these tools actually have created some wonderful things in the world. They’ve reunited lost family members. They’ve found organ donors.” Apps like Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter design their apps to be addictive to people and to draw as much attention as they can for as long as they can. They look at how much time they can take from people. They keep track of every action, when you look at something, how long you look at it for, when you go to something else. They have data on every single person who uses technology for basically everything they do. The documentary goes on and on to explain more and more in depth about the dark side of technology and how it affects us people.

In my opinion, I think this documentary is really good and people should watch this. It does go by slowly, especially with transitions and such, but the information they are trying to spread is important and should have attention brought to it. It’s important to know what the consequences are of something people use in their everyday lives almost every minute of the day. I was personally aware that companies try to make their apps addictive (why wouldn’t a company try to make people use their product more?) but I was not aware of the consequences and the more in depth parts about this. It makes me worry for other people who are not aware and do not think about the consequences that may occur. I think the quote in the picture down below is something that explains our relationship with technology very well. “The technology that connects us also controls us.” As said earlier by the former employee, this all started with good intentions. It brought people together and we were able to advance as a society; however, there is a price for us to pay for that. Technology is changing us, slowly but surely. It’s affecting us everyday and we do not do anything about it.
