The Woodland Monarch

The Lord of the Deers was journeying home
When out of the dark came metal and pain
He was struck by a car, death wrapped in chrome
Fast approaching was the end of his reign
He hobbled and limped away from the crash
Feebly finding the forest and grove
The Lord called his kin, they came in a dash
Only to cry and curse the man who drove
He laid on the soft grass gasping for breath
While stags circled his body in flowers
They pranced around in a glum dance of death
Comforting the king in his final hours
Even plants wilted in grief and mourning
Over a soul that passed without warning
