I wanted to show you men
being human.
I wanted you to understand that people are people.
Even in war, men have their faith
in God.

I wanted to show you
Unshaved and dirty soldiers praying
for their and their friend’s lives.
Men carrying nothing but memories
that will last forever.

I want you to notice how in the middle of war,
men put down their guns to pray.
Instead of shooting and killing,
praying for mercy and forgiveness.

I want you to see their heads bowed,
hands intertwined.
The comradery, even when death tears
them apart.

I wanted you to see men,
thinking and contemplating,
wondering
if war is the right thing.

I was inspired to write this piece by reading a poem of the same title, about what the author of a picture wanted his audience to see from it. His pictures stem from the Vietnam War, the first time Americans got real photos of war. The piece describes exactly what his emotions and thoughts were while looking at the photos and my poem describes mine.
