Scared to Smile
I can’t bring myself to smile
With the mourners standing round
Their thoughts are in the casket
They loom above like stormy clouds
It’s been so long now
I have moved on
They sit there, statues
Their mouths eternal frowns
I saw the sun rising
While they were still asleep
Inside my heaving breast
Is a beauty great- I weep
There’s so much more to life
Than they have chosen
The flower blooms
Just as their eyes are closing
When they’re blind and deaf and dumb
Like the Pinball wizard
I can do no more for them
I turn away, into the hot midday
And as the sun sets
The stars come out
My tear-chapped lips
Shape a broken smile
