brokeness a constant theme
the poverty between the trees
tired, dirty faces
peering out from chain-link fences
grubby hands, begging, outreached
muttered words of anger
rising in the dusty heat
sweat and grime swirling
from hair to feet
glass, trash, all litter the streets
children crying,for something to eat
but love is here
between the skeletal trees
reaching out, and enveloping me
a cracked smile
revealing missing tooth
people dying, for lack of safe roof
a vicious cycle of homelessness
end this era of brokeness

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem while I was on a mission trip in Philadelphia. I was working with Broadstreet Ministries through my church's youth group. I spent a week meeting and talking with a lot of the homeless and impoverished people there. They are people just like everyone else. I wrote this because I really connected with some of the people that I met there, and really saw how unjust the broken system was. these people were homeless because of things like injuries that they couldn't afford to take care of, or being laid off from work due to the economy. They didn't do anything wrong. But yet these people are so positive and friendly and just nice, loving people in general. So many of them love God, and seeing how they believe in him through everything is really inspirational.

It's sad but that's what makes it so powerful. Great Job.
