Ode to Rice
Ode to Rice
As the myriad
pebble stones,
all as white
as winter snow,
descend
into the vacant pot,
they become filled
with calm,
cool water.
The rice cooker
boils the water
for half an hour
and then
releases a steaming fog
that engulfs my face
like a tidal wave
that looms
over an extensive city.
What is left?
A delicacy
of perfect moisture.
Not too dry,
not too soggy,
and as the
saltiness
of soy sauce
contrasts
with the mildness
of rice
I am bestowed
with a delightful satisfaction
that provides the source
of my daily consumption.

For this piece, I just wanted to express my love and enjoyment for a meal that I eat nearly everyday using a free verse structure.
