the leaving

this great ancestral oak
cultivated, nursed from a sapling
it has branched out for eons
filling time and space
with the rustle of its leaves
each year
as the seasons turn
brilliant summer hues to
fiery autumnal shades
the leaves reveal themselves
and fly away in the wind
never to reunite.
