I watched him stumble, watched him fall
upon the battle field
he looked at me and I at him
'til on that ground I kneeled

His cold lips parted solemnly
the words stuck in his throat
I knew his fate could not be changed
yet, still I gave my coat

Then with his eyes he spoke to me
and in them I saw all
his life, his love, his family
lost in that fatal fall

His eyes now a burning passion
of anger and of strife
screaming I can't leave my fam'ly,
my duties, or my life

He looked to me for the answers
but sadly I had none
His memory still tears at me
That war nobody won

The author's comments:
Visiting Gettysburg made me think about all the people who don't appear in the history books, but who still suffered through the times or fought in the war. I wrote this poem for those whose stories weren't known, in hopes that we remember what people sacrificed for our country.

It is better to write for yourself and have no audience than write for your audience and have no self.

this is so fantastic! it really moved me because one of my greatest fears is being forgotten. The way that you told the soldiers story without really telling it was perfect.

I'm fine. I just feel like I'm shattered into hundred of little shards of glass and I'm going to hurt everybody who loves me.

i hope more people read this poem. it's true that there were people that got hurt that weren't recognised that should be that won't be and it brings tears to my eyes knowing that for many people the losses of love andlife were too numerous to ever begained whether in another time orever because love that is lost can never truly be replaced.
