A Few Shades Short of a Dove
Did you hear
of the little dove
that wanted to be a crow?
He painted his wings black
Styled his tail feathers
And took to the hundred mile sky
Never to be seen again
His six sister-doves
Cried themselves quite hoarse
Upon an elder sycamore tree
Two kings were at war
When one day
A dove came upon the two kings
Beseeched them “take a feather”
A child plays in the garden
With a dove as his companion
But he must grow
And the dove is no more
Dove and Crow must do battle
Or so the Old One dictates
Once friends, not so anymore
As the battle rages on
Beneath them
A little bird
Wishes to grow
And become mighty and strong
But for him, it was not so
And he grew into himself
A little white dove does just
Across the world-weary sea
Sits a little dove in tree
One day he thought
“Tomorrow, I shall say hello
And goodbye”
