Watchmen is a movie based off of the best-selling graphic novel of the same name and takes place in an alternate 1985. In this world, masked vigilantes exist and act as superheroes, but when an ex-hero is murdered, the Comedian, a masked vigilante, Rorschach, who used to work with the Comedian, starts investigating the case. After a slew of events and attempts to connect the dots, he tries to figure out what somebody's masterplan is. Meanwhile, in this world, Russia has hundreds of nuclear weapons that are capable of destroying all life as people know it. Rorschach begins to believe that the possible upcoming war has to do with why people are trying to kill ex-superheroes. Because he believes this, Rorschach goes to his old comrades that worked with him on a team called the Watchmen, and the members of the team rediscover their past and reminisce, while unearthing dark secrets that they never knew existed.
The movie is gritty, dark, fantastic, and touches on real issues that most movies don't even dare to go near. The movie talks about what it means to be human, the means to reach world-wide peace, and how cruel mankind truly is. The ending to the movie is really well done and ends everything perfectly. Although the movie doesn't differ that much from the graphic novel, it follows the story of the book nicely and accurately. The plot has plenty of twists that almost no one will see coming, assuming that they didn't read the graphic novel. The visual effects of the movie are great and help to put the images from the comics onto the big screen. The movie also has plenty of symbolism and uses literary devices all throughout the film. Watchmen, the movie, isn't anywhere close to being as powerful and moving as the graphic novel, but it is still a good film adaptation that's worth watching.
