Love is My Garden

Love is a garden, so pretty and new
Beautiful flowers surrounding my heart
Love is a garden so fragile and true
Until those feelings tear my heart apart.

The daylily blooms, innocent and pure
She blooms over and over and again
For a lonely heart she provides a cure
Though her love’s wilting will cause no one pain.

The rose bud I see so close to blooming
Her petals and thorns make me swoon
For when I approach and dread is looming
Her prick to my heart feels like a harpoon.

I bask in the sun made by my garden
But slowly my heart will start to harden.

The author's comments:

This sonnet is based around the idea of love. The daylily was intended to represent young love. Young love is a fleeting kind of love that tends to be gained and lost quickly, like a daylily. I used the rose to symbolize true love. The idea of it so beautiful and enchanting, but get to close and it can hurt.
