What makes a rose a rose

Is it the sweet, fragrant smell?

Or how in vines it can grow

Some say that is why, and that is good and well

However, others will say it is the title

Though what rose does need a name

As one can see simply that it is not idle

And without words is still a rose, plain

Some will say it is the red color and green stem

Though can they not come in varying hues?

Will you any flower condemn

To live as a rose because of how it is viewed?

I say a rose is a rose from its graceful petals

With no matter as to if they are in fine fettle

The author's comments:

I wanted to write about roses, as they are such a popular muse/inspiration in many pieces of poetry and writing, and are commonly used in literature, but this poem was mainly inspired by a line from one of Shakespeare’s plays, Romeo and Juliet, that says “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”, so I thought about what I thought makes a rose a rose.
