Who You Are at Heart
She was three years old that day
Bouncing on his knee
Listening to his stories
Grinning happily
They were gathered round the table
About to bow their heads
But he lifted her up high
And smiling said,
[Chorus]
“I don’t care if you make it in this big world
God’s got a plan for you
Just remember baby girl
When life seems to fall apart
To be who you are at heart.”
She was wearing that black skirt
Barely covered her hips
Hating who she’d become
How her heart was ripped
She opened up her locker
Critical voice in her head
Almost missed the piece of paper
The note that read:
“It don’t matter if you make it in this big world
God’s got a plan for you
Just remember girl
When life seems to fall apart
To be who you are at heart.”
She was sitting in that church
She hadn’t visited in years
Wondering if He cared
Remembering old fears
Tears were running down her face
As she bowed her head
But above her doubts and worries
She heard a voice that said,
“It don’t matter if you make it in this big world
‘Cause I’ve got a plan for you
Just remember baby girl
When life seems to fall apart
To be who you are at heart.”
She threw away her short skirts
Revisited that old church
Finally talked to her dad
Told him about the revelation that she had had,
“’Cause it don’t matter if you make it in this big world
God’s got a plan for you
Just remember girls
When life seems to fall apart
To be who you are at heart
To be who you are at heart.”
