THEME FOR ENGLISH B
Model after Langston Hughes poem
By Julia Swill
The instructor said,
Go home and write
a page tonight.
And let that page come out of you---
Then, it will be true.
I wonder if it's that simple?
I am fourteen, born in Parkland Florida.
I went to school there, and now in Coconut Creek
I am the only Julia Swill in my class.
A single teenage girl living an ordinary life
Outgoing, but reserved at times
It's not easy to know what is true for you or me
at fourteen, the normal teenager. But I guess I'm not the normal teenager.
Well, I like to eat, sleep, and listen to music
I like to run, text, and experience new things.
But if only I was an ordinary teenager,
I have little to none of free time, I have privates, practices, and workouts
I want to travel the world and see what’s out there
Being unique is the one that stands out in the crowd, the leader
I’m out of the ordinary.
The things I do are average, or if you want to call normal—- but uniquely me
So will my page be colored that I write?
Being me, it will not be white nor black
But it will be
a part of me, instructor.
You are ordinary---
Only if I were ordinary it would be a blank page
My page will be all mixed colors
That’s unique.
Perhaps you don’t want to be different
Nor do I want to be blank.
As I learn from you, I learn to be more engaged
I guess you learn from me---
Unusual, uncommon, rare
although you're older---and very different from me---
and somewhat more free.
This is my page for English B.
