Ears.
Saturated sweet honeydew days
and standing at the corner
thinking we were cool
Bottle caps from parking lots
and drinking Coca-Cola
sitting on the stools
Bookmarked memories on
dogeared pages
of mistreated books
Reminded us we were still young
not yet absorbed by
each other's looks
Umbrellas of
conversation
we didn't understand
Long talks at night
in sticky air
holding each other's hands
We were long lost then found
each other in
the jungle of teenage years
We said, "don't shoot," but
they didn't listen or maybe
they didn't have ears
