Do I say goodbye to everything I know, willingly?
A death sentence with a purple heart.
I pray and plea. God let me go.
To the woman I love and children I’ll never know.
The scriptures are there and I understand my part.
But God. How can I say goodbye to a life not fulfilled.

What does God have to say to my wife and kids
To how they’ll never exist. Not under his plan.
To my parents. How they play the role of Mary and Joseph so truly.
I apologize for my fate. The choice is not mine.

A diamond slices through the chains that hold me to my fate
Temporarily breaking me free till reality nails me to the cross
I understand now.
I see the plan. My sacrifice is so much more than a life not lived.
God I come to you with open arms.
The good of the many outweighs the good of the few
I am that few. I see. I understand.
My fate is not escapable. Forgive me for my doubts Oh, Lord.
Forgive me for not trusting in you immediately.
I go now willingly.
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit”

This piece was inspired by the novel A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. It depicts my interpretation of Owen's battle between his fate and free will.
