Serendipity

The occurrence of events by chance in a beneficial way,

At least that’s what the dictionaries told me.

But serendipity is simply an illusion,

A play of one’s perception.

Don’t we think of winning the lottery,

And other happy yet highly unlikely happenings,

When this word comes to mind?

But if we think about it,

Isn’t every moment of our lives serendipitous?

If a student forgets her homework,

Despite the loss, doesn’t she learn responsibility?

Doesn’t she gain so much more, by fluke?

And all this brings a complex question to mind,

Questioning what people and dictionaries think to be true.

Isn’t our whole life serendipity,

The ups and the downs,

Making “serendipity” not by chance,

Therefore, not serendipitous?

The author's comments:

I've never believed in luck or destiny. I've never believed in fortune tellers and palm readers. I believe that no one can tell us what the future holds for us because we are the ones who create our own future. We create our own destiny. The intention of this poem is to tell others that whatever good or bad happens to us is based on how hard we work and the deeds we've done. Whenever anything bad occurs, we shouldn't blame it on this nonexistent force called "destiny" or say that we have "bad luck". Nothing happens by chance in this world. Life is carefully plotted by one's own hands.
