Don't Put Me Out
When you wake up in the morning,
or afternoon from a night of tossing and turning,
no one is going to be there to describe to you the sun.
No one is going to tell you
that you’re far more radiant,
with a beauty so blinding.
They’ll introduce you to everything but that.
They’ll scorch you, because people are flames.
As are each of us,
which is why sometimes we bring ourselves
the greatest pain of all.
People want the light,
without having first gone through the night.
Yet, it is through enduring the darkest of times,
when all you may have is your own flame,
that’s when you learn to control it.
That’s when you look past how it burns,
to seeing what’s lit before you.
And before you know it is morning again,
and for once you find
your own flame giving you warmth,
just like the sun of a new day.
