Left foot

Right foot

inhale
exhale

commanding myself to keep going

keep walking

keep breathing

the sound of
my boots hitting the pavement
and your voice echoing in the nighttime air

felt like earthquakes on my heart

I let you in
I let you pull me apart
a p a r t

Bit by bit

until the only thing left was the gaping hole in my chest
from where you tore out my heart

my poor little heart
bruised

scarred

and bandaged up

but you weren’t like the rest
you sew me back up
with words I’d thought I’d never hear
words I never deserved

My heart felt different

new
fresh out of the box

I didn’t know this feeling
c o n f u s e d

I kept walking
let my mind figure out what was going on with my heart
and I let my pulse settle
and I let my lips savors your taste
and I let my nose consume your scent

With my hand still in yours
and my head still on your chest
it hit me

hit me like a ton of bricks

hit me like a ray of sun

this feeling
this peculiar sensation

in my head

in my heart

in my trembling knees

was love
