Daddy's in Neverland
August 29, 2014
Two years of parties and weed left you a
half baked college degree,
and a wife that you won in a fist fight.
(But she loved you anyway)
She was Wendy, and you were Peter Pan,
poppin' Ritalin to bring you back from Neverland.
But she's always been singin'
"Daddy loves Mommy
Daddy is a good man
Daddy makes money
Daddy does what he can."
All you needed was that apartment in Philly,
and enough beer for the bad days.
Your best self was the you that was drunk,
so even though she hated the smell on your breath
it was better than your sober sadness,
or the man that she left.
So she just kept singin'
"Daddy loves Mommy
Daddy is a good man
Daddy makes money
Daddy does what he can."
You speak like a scholar,
curse like a sailor,
and taught me how to pray like a broken record.
I was never sure where you were,
so I asked Mom if you were smoking again,
and after a long pause and a glance to my brother,
she had us singin'
"Daddy loves Mommy
Daddy is a good man
Daddy makes money
Daddy does what he can."
