An American woman
It’s a classic American scene-
A family barbecue in the backyard
children playing whiffle ball with their cousins and friends
The woman cooking the steaks
in the classic American scene
flips them robotically over the flaming black coals
Her expression is pallid when her husband’s face appears in the doorway
Eyes as cool as the bottle of Heineken in his burly hand
The feeling of being useless and controlled
through no fault of her own, is common
that’s why I say, an American classic.
