My Box
I have this box that’s decoupaged with memories,
Framed with laughter and hinged with love.
Inside I store the little things, small moments,
That I wish to remember forever.
It has the motion of the corners of his mouth turning up
Into the crooked smile that is perfect in its imperfection.
There is the sound of his chipped acoustic guitar,
As he sings me melodies and improvises the chorus.
I saved the way her red dress caught the stage light,
The flash of crimson matching both her lips and her passion.
I have the twisted combination of anxiety and elation
As the first joke jumped from face to face in the form of a smile.
There is the taste of dry toast and black coffee
At four in the morning after a midnight movie.
I kept the language shared through a series of looks,
And having her understand the silence, although no one else did.
I will cling to the harmony of our laughs in unison;
A contemporary song that will never go out of style.
I will always remember falling asleep tangled together on couches
Finding immense amounts of comfort in the discomfort.
If I could store people in my box, I would,
I would recreate the memories and little moments.
But people move on and ready or not, life keeps going,
So the pieces of my life in my box will have to do.
