"If they cut off both hands, I will compose music anyway holding the pen in my teeth." -Shostakovich

Puddles of promises our pinkies make

our mouths break as winter strolls

in through the rusty courtyard gates

creak and sneer

Winter, our old friend, our confidant

who answers more than he asks when spring waltzes by

More-grey-than-white that stains our tongues
No longer chained by
icicles,

melting glass on the hemlock tree

Runoff from empty days

clouds we shaped and taped

to the sky
Blue Jays we drew and glued to canvas
Thick and heavy strokes,

swift and thin on the other side of the gates
