Some Nights in the City
Some nights in the city
I walk
head up
shoulders back
I stride
into the life that beholds me
so many things I may never know
the nooks and crannies of my town
may mean everything in the world to someone
and nothing to me
sun setting
hair flying
I put a hop in my step
palms to the sky
yelling "what a life!"
some nights in the city
I feel the bitter cold
and the sadness that overcomes
covering me with a thick wool blanket
of all my old memories
like flipping through an old photo book
and sometimes
I will walk up my small hill
and look beyond the horizon
wondering what my city will be like one day
what I will be like
my own special place no one knows
I could gaze for hours
through the grated fence
that holds my dreams and fears
and I stare into my city
and am wonderstruck by it's greatness
but this doesn't happen all of the time,
only some nights in the city.
