"Keep my eyes to serve, my hands to learn" The song Below my Feet by Mumford and Sons

I know who I was.
A dancer
A master of my body
A bender of time and space
An athlete
In prime condition
Soaring through the air
Turning tornadoes

It was exhilarating
I loved dance
I loved the way it made me look
The way it made me feel

So I stopped.

You see,
I was a dancer
That identity was dangerous for me
I knew that dancing would not solve my problems
Only create more

So I stopped.

I stopped, knowing that
I needed a true identity
Dance was my false identity,
My false personality

This decision is
Painful.
And scary.
I am starting over
My slate will need coloring in

My heart aches for dance but
I will give it what it needs
My tears flow for my
Comfort in my old identity,
But I am stepping into a
Bigger world.

I want to do this.
I want to find out
Who I truly am.

The author's comments:
I have been struggling with my relationship with dance. I wrote this poem when I was absolutely positive that I was quitting.
