Legend of the Summer of '09
In the summer of ’09,
Something magical happened.
In a daze,
In a haze,
In a wonderful maze.
In a beach house,
In a rich house,
Here and there,
Everywhere.
My youth finally blossomed in the dunes of Indiana.
In the sand we built a fire,
Sat round and talked for hours.
Sun sickness and skin itches,
Buzzing bugs and messy hair.
Sleeping in our bikinis,
Falling down the stairs.
Floating in the warm water,
Feeling free.
I was ready to take on the world.
Playing with our towels in the wind,
Playing cards, and never win,
Eating chips in our bed.
Going to the movies in our suits,
Late at night we drank ourselves away.
Never before had I felt so light,
Dancing and giggling,
It felt so right.
It only lasted for a week,
But it carries a mystique.
In that week I learned to fly,
To just let go and dive into the deep.
I remember the songs we played,
How careless and dumb we were.
But it was magical,
The sickness made me strong,
And the waves made me soft.
The lake kneaded my soul
Into a fresh-faced teenager.
Food came in mountains,
Delicious and didn’t make me fat.
Every morning waking up to the gentle waves,
Still in our suits and matted hair.
Eat, Swim, Eat,
Go anywhere.
Drink, Sleep, Drink,
Everywhere.
