Center Stage

Behind the curtain I watch
as the audience chatters in hushed tones,
butterflies fluttering inside my stomach.
For those beginning nervous seconds,
I stand still by the curtain,
just steps from the stage.
Then suddenly it grows silent.
When the lights flash off,
and a single spotlight shines on center stage,
I step into the light,
look in to the audience,
and begin to sing the single note that begins it all.
