What I Get
What I get
I fell asleep on the bus
Passed my stop and a few
Forgot the flowers at the station
But that’s what I get for trying
The house keys jingle in my pocket
They don’t open the right door
Only a place to stay
But that’s what I get for hoping
Surrounded by memories of you and me
Back before you decided
Before I cried
But that’s what I get for dreaming
Coded ‘good-bye’s
And ‘for your own good’s
I hadn’t understood
But that’s what I get for holding on
They were really ‘I love you’s
And ‘I’ll miss you’s
That I found to late
But that’s what I get for reminiscing
Letters in the mail
That said the wrong words
And tumble to the ground with my tears
But that’s what I get for waiting
Wilted five buck flowers
One last bus pass
And standing behind the crowd
But that’s what I get for assuming
Murmured songs from no one who loves you
Worthless expensive gifts and empty kind words
And that I, the only one who still truly loves you
But that’s what I get from caring
Walking in the rain, flowerless
To a place of nothing and irony
Because you would’ve done that same for me
But that’s what I get from loving only you
