Countertop
Remember I was cold hard comfort
The night he said I don’t love you anymore.
You sat beside the empty ice cream box with your thick blue quilt
And gripped your knees with your shaking hands as you held yourself together.
But I knew you were falling apart.
You stayed up for hours in that lonely dark kitchen.
With nothing but a cranberry candle burning through the sound of tears.
And your fist how it pounded so hard and so expectedly upon me
You knew all along he wasn’t going to call.
You stared at my gray marble lost in its confusion
For you had just lost love.
