I'm still a geek on the inside, that's the important thing.

-Wierd Al Yankovic

It’s not hard to forget someone,
Even after years of telling yourself
How special they are;
Lies of how empty your life would be without them.

After giving and receiving
homemade Christmas gifts for half your life,
Even these will eventually lose all meaning.
Even the small things will be hopelessly forgotten.

Years of friendships will come down to nothing,
And you strive to convince yourself that you still matter.
Which you do!
Just not to a certain person.

That person will go on
Without a second thought,
Not weighted down with remorse
And regret at “what-could have been’s.”

Watching them walk away is the hardest part.
Seeing friends leave without a goodbye,
Even though you’ll see them every day.
Keeping their distance.
Lying to yourself is the easiest way out.
Humans are able to adapt to anything,
And you will keep living
Day after day.

But maybe someday friendships will take root,
And there will never again be a memory lost
Or an abandoned gift.
