Hearts
When you left you took my heart,
You told me you’d be back with it in no time,
Everyday I waited for you letters,
To tell me your safe
To tell me you love me,
Everyone being longer than the last,
I tried to keep my mind in the right direction,
Friends telling me that your coming home,
Thinking of you as I lay my head on my pillow at night,
Wondering if your thinking of me,
The last letter I ever received,
Telling me you loved me
And couldn’t wait to be home,
When I heard that knock at the door
Saw men in uniform,
My heart sank and a tear slid down my face,
Handing me a letter I could barely hold,
Dropping to my knees
Trying to read what I couldn’t understand,
Speaking was impossible,
I told them it couldn’t be true,
You weren’t gone
You promised you’d never leave.
