A man said to the universe:
"Sir I exist!" "However," replied the universe, "The fact has not created in me a sense of obligation."
-- Stephen Crane

Set the clocks back
to when I was a tree and you were a star
and my branches grew around you
Past the moon for you alone

We were on fire then
Stardust, stardust, lit me up
like the torch I was, sparked
my gasoline veins, my heart's lace

We saw the world from the eyes of a god
Baby, it's a beautiful locket
Sapphire skin with emeralds pushed in
And a key, so long lost, we'd forgotten

Time flies like souls 'till you've seen every star
Then it crashes and burns
and black holes are born
And that's when the blind learn to see

We saw the world from the eyes of a god
Pandora's locket weathered,
swung open, and inside the serpents sang
of its secrets, universal and ugly

Now, more than anything,
I wish I may, I wish I might
cut the cord on beautiful lights,
false stars that from afar
hide the fine print, the sin etched into city streets

But when you can't change the world
it changes you
flames dim and poorly packaged hearts
shape up, like stones

Set the clocks back
To when I was a tree and you were a star.
