They outstrip steps in record time
and cross out brilliance of the mind
because they're the special and
they are the great;
they sow love
but they spread hate

with light itself the dark is cast
and, cursing the hand who lights the flame,
humanity hates its own success
and curls up afraid
to set foot
in the cold, dark day.

I see them stand so proud and tall
and I say 'hey!' if it counts at all
and maybe they will wave to me

but if they don't,
that's humanity
and there's a candle inside of me
that can't be dampened by a fire

Who knows?
I may just burn,
or maybe I'll burn higher.
