Last night
before falling asleep on on the phone
with me
you said,
(so quietly I could barely here)
"I love you"
The phone line crackled
with static
I said,
(Changing the subject so cleverly)
"Okay, so yesterday..."
We didn't say much after that
and you
fell asleep
I listened
(so easily because it was silent)
to your slow, steady breathing
and regretted not saying
"I love you, too"
