My Heritage

May 1, 2024
By Anonymous

I was always told to be proud

I was told not to be ashamed

Yet for some reason I’m embarrassed to say my own name

All the stares at my food

All the petty attitudes

Show exactly how I’m viewed

The color of my skin

The beauty of my salwar kameez

Or the faith that I choose to practice

Are inferior in their eyes

Because they don’t know me

Their minds are filled with hatred and lies

My people are not just makers of clothes

We are not workers to exploit

We are not curry stinking aliens

And no we are not Indians either

We are Bangladeshis

Hardworking, determined, & eager
