The Cold Nights End When the Sun Rises

We sway in the wind, the beads of my sunflower facing towards him
But he never looks my way
He faces towards his one and only sun, away from me.

As the sun sets, I turn away from him, heartbroken each day
And don’t even care to look back at him
Because he will never look at me

Alas, when the sun rises, I will face towards him again
In hopes that maybe he’ll look at me
But I receive the same answer each day

“No.” a voice says to me.
“Please look away,
Because every time you look it will lead you astray.”

I didn’t want to hear the voice
But, now, I felt like he and I were miles apart
He was in the warm sun and I was suffering in the cold depths of Antarctica

When the night came, I faced away
Not willing myself to turn around
I didn’t want to see him again

But I got an urge to face him
I turned my flower on its stem and faced him
And he was looking right at me

My roots moved over to his, and we sat side by side
We watched the sunset rise
And we faced the sun together

All these years I thought the sun had been his love
But no
Only the person he aspires to be

And I will stay at his side for all the days
Swaying in the wind
Watching the sun rise
