Like puzzle pieces from different jigsaws we just didn't fit.

Fundamentally similar, yet different enough that

No matter how hard you push, the edges of the puzzles will always be jagged against your fingertips.

The picture will never be complete.

Like short cabinets and stacks of plates we just didn’t fit.

Mismatched, colorful ceramic radiates teetery comfort,

too mountainous for the shallow interior of the cabinet.

Take plates off. The cabinet won’t grow, after all.

Like a too-small pair of boots we just didn’t fit.

Comfortable and broken-in we walked together

soles crunching in harmony against gravel, dirt, sand.

Uncomfortable and broken-down we walk our separate ways now

Swollen, chafing feet singing longing songs of freedom.

Would it be better to walk barefoot?

Like moving a couch we just didn’t fit.

Narrow wooden doorframes are jailbars, stringently forbidding continuance

The load you bear, an amalgam of fabric, springs, and wood, grows ever heavier with each step.

Strand the sofa. Ease from encumberment.

He wasn't what I needed, and that was what he needed to understand.

We Just Didn't Fit.

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece recovering from a toxic relationship that never truly felt interlocked. In other words, we just didn't fit (as the title suggests.)
