In times of war, darkness, and hiding

Anne is the light

Living in the dusty secret annex for two years

Anne always looked on the bright side

Even when it was hard to see all those kids playing

All those days hiding and having nothing to do

Dreaming of the day she could leave

And follow her dreams as a journalist

Mr. Frank got Anne a diary on her 13th birthday

Anne wrote in her diary day after day

Talking about what her life was like in hiding

The touch of the diary brought warmth to her heart

The diary was like her best friend during this time of fear

Always there for her when she needed to talk to someone

It was almost like the diary was calling her name

The silence was loud during the day

No talking, no moving, no using the bathroom

All the rules that she had to follow

Hard for her to keep quiet

Hard for her to not move

Still as a turtle

Making sure they didn’t get caught

Dying to go outside and smell the fresh air

Leaving the annex, left everyone feeling free

Though they all knew they were being sent to a concentration camp

They were glad to be leaving that small, lonely annex

No matter the challenge

Anne found the hope and love despite the darkness

I will bear witness by telling her story

Making sure that everyone finds the good in a hard situation

And honoring her life

Her story will have an ever lasting impact
