Of countless hours spent
With dear friends
And my puppy
I know every inch
Of the field
Every blade of grass
Every memory I spent
Watching children play
Myself included
Having fun
Experiences of
Baseball, softball, soccer
But I fear that these
Memories will be just that,
Memories of a favorite place
When the rumble of excavators
Goes long through the month
When our beloved children
Wake up the next day
And see that their beloved park
Has forever changed
To be surrounded by a maze of
Concrete, light posts, and cars
When every trip nearby
Is filled with nervousness
For any vehicle
Barreling ‘round the corner
We have to cherish our open spaces
Take care of them so others
Can build their own experiences
If you value the importance
Of letting kids play
Fetch, boomerangs, kites, tag
Then preserve these memories
So future generations
Can enjoy one of Mill Valley’s treasures,
Hauke Park.

I wrote this poem to support our neighborhood's movement against developing a high-density unit near the park and ruining its character.
