Our three years is almost at an end
Of middle school, the long and unforgettable journey
When we were wide-eyed, timid 6th graders
Responsible, confident 7th graders
To becoming adaptive, resilient 8th graders
This year served as our biggest challenge
We were forced to embrace Zoom
Where friends became tiny pixelated rectangles
Backpacks, once worn with diligence, even pride
Were left in closets to collect dust
The meaningful in-person interactions with teachers and peers
Relegated to mere memories of a recent past
But we persevered, triumphed over all the difficulties
Due to our ingenuity, determination and positivity
Today, we can finally be together and celebrate all that we have done
Be proud of yourself for your talents, your accomplishments
Remember how we faced down a pandemic and how
Every other challenge pales in comparison
To what we have overcame as the class of 2021.

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem to read at the graduation for the Class of 2021 at my middle school.  It is an homage to the three years we spent as middle schoolers, and how we overcame every challenge in our way, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
