I'm not special, I'm just limited edition.

Mothers, however they go about

Will always be seen as a token of strength

While men fly away

To their jobs, and leave the women

Alone

To care for a precious child

Like a teacher

They sit at their child's side

And point to the letters and numbers

Whispering to them special lessions

For the child to remember and learn

Unlike teachers

Who's reward is a high test score

And parents' approval

A mother's reward is the smile

On her child's face

And their bubbling, gurgling laugh

Like a construction worker

They build towers

Whether from blocks or laundry

Or their child's birthday cake

Each more magnificent than the last

Unlike construction workers

Who's reward is the sun on their backs

And the building scraping the sky

A mother's reward is the squeal of the child

As they push the whole thing down

And the ecstasy of building again

Like a doctor

They cure all sickness

Armed with a cool cloth and a story

They make the child laugh

While stopping the hurt

Unlike doctors

Who's reward is a grateful thank you

And added practice

A mother's reward is the love

Visible in their child's eyes

And the ability to watch them heal and grow

Like a chef

They fly around the kitchen

Preparing sacred meals

To get their picky child to eat

Something other than scrambled eggs

Unlike chefs

Who's reward is the approval of feasters

And a new recipe to master

A mother's reward is her child's cheeks

Stuffed to the gills with food

And a plate licked clean

Like a superhero

They keep their child safe

Battling all dangers and threats

From kidnappers to moving cars

They are an unbreakable shield

Unlike superheroes

Who's reward is locked-up villians

And die hard fans

A mother's reward is her child's hand

Held in her own

And their chatter as they cross the street

A mother has many jobs

From mentor to protector

And as the child grows and matures

They will remember the challeges

That mothers have to go through

And the sacrifices

They have to make

And hope that

They can do all those things

For their own child

Someday

The author's comments:

Being a mother isn't one job. Being a mother is being a teacher, chef, protector, mentor, healer, all while trying to keep up with your own life. While I'm not a mother yet, I know the struggles mothers have to go through to ensure their children's safety and happiness, and to them I am grateful. Let's give a round of applause to the people we call "Mom."
