My teacher called us over and we looked

A cork was floating in the water.

“Who knows why?”

I don’t.

She used big words,

8th grade words.

One day I’d know

Why the cork rose like a fish

Bobbing for bits of bread in our pond.

For now her monotone words

Remained 8th grade noise.

This piece came from fuzzy memories of kindergarten. My teacher at the time also taught 8th grade science, so she would bring little demonstrations for us to look at. This one particularly stood out in my memories for some reason.
