Love?

Some people question it

Others despise it

But everyone knows what it is

Or at least, they think they do

What is it, really?

Butterflies in your stomach?

Shivers down your spine?

No, it's none of those things and all at the same time

It is the smell of your favorite food in the kitchen

It's the person you care about the most

The visits to the doctor or dentist

It's the fluffy pillows on your bed

It's the warm laundry, fresh from the dryer

Newly printed paper, typing a letter

It's the little things in your life

That make a big difference in someone else’s

It's the small things no one notices

Your favorite song, color, or animal

It's the things you pay attention to the most

Do you know what I’m talking about?

I'm talking about the way someones eyes twinkle

The color of your friends shirt

The warmth of a blanket

You may not think this, but it's true

That is what it is

It's not as plain as night and day

It's not as noticeable as the wind on a cold morning

It's not big as an elephant in a zoo

It's as noticeable as an ant on a sidewalk

As small as a mouse, or a cat at night

What am I talking about?

I’m talking about love

Love

A word people use freely, to the relationships of two weeks

That soon end in a matter of days

A word you say to your pets

Who can't understand you

Or to your favorite food

Which will eventually disappear

What I’m trying to say

Is that save those word for the things

When you really mean it

Not for when you know you don't mean it

Not for when you are texting your friends

But for when it might be the last time you see something

The first time you have seen someone in a while

When you really need someone

That’s when you say it

When you mean it, when it's important

Not to be funny, or cute

To really mean the words:

I Love You

Can mean a lot to the person you say them to

When it means nothing to you

The author's comments:

When I wrote this, I was going through a rough patch in my life and I realized that I am probably not the only one feeling this way. So, I decided to share it. I put a lot of tears and effort into this piece, listening to sad songs. And thinking to myself about all the times I have personally said "I love you". I was debating whether or not I had meant it in the past to previous people and whether or not I mean it to the ones I say it to now. I have also been thinking about how when I stop saying these words to certian people, does the feeling ever really leave? Because you probably have loved the people or things you have said it to previously, but something happened and all of a sudden, the feelings change. But do they really change? They feeling of whether or not you meant the words you said will always be there. The feeling of actually meaning them, will be there. It will never leave, it just won't be as strong as it used to. But this poem means a lot to me in more ways than I can explain.
