"Why is it that we rejoice at a birth and cry at a funeral? It is because we are not the ones involved."
-Mark Twain, "Pudd'nHead Wilson"

Courage kissed me as if

We needed each other to survive,

And maybe we did.

When I rose from my seat and my knees knocked,

I was certain the whole city heard:

Bone clacking on bone,

Just like my chattering teeth.

But still I rose, and

Chutzpah held my hand, warmer than

The fear that held me back.

Chutzpah:
Chutzpah is the quality of audacity, for good or for bad. The Yiddish word derives from the Hebrew word ḥutspâ, meaning "insolence", "cheek" or "audacity". (Wikipedia)
