Artificial

Some people wear their kindness like a plastic bag:
Artificial and easy to see through.
Of their graciousness they like to brag,
but their intentions are not to please you.

They use their nice words for personal gain.
Saying them only for their kindness to be seen.
Inside they are simply playing the game,
despite how pretty their outside may seem.

If it only takes a nice word,
for them to be thought of as kind,
they’ll make sure that they are heard.
Even if it’s not what’s really on their mind.

Their compliments are met with gratitude,
from everyone in the place.
But they have no problem being rude,
when no one can see their second face.

I believe there should be no motive,
behind a kind remark.
But a lot of people do not live
with other’s intentions at heart.

I feel like this poem describes just about everyone.
I'll admit, I found a bit of myself in the piece while I wrote it. But it helped me rethink how I live, and I hope it does the same for others.
