Loneliness

Amid a sea of faces,
In waves of passersbys,
Awash among the crowd,
And the sweeping surf of eyes.

Amongst the bustling voices,
The buzzing hum of sound,
Hard pressed by rains of noise,
With chatter all around

Beneath the crush of movement,
Of surging waves of coats,
The busy surf comes crashing o’er,
A sea where nothing floats.

Hollow in the storm,
As waves crash all around,
A battered little boat,
Is deaf to all the sound.

No laugh it hears, no smile it sees,
Engulfed by the thund’ring sea,
No jolt it feels as it tips and turns,
Drowning silently.

I was inspired to write this poem after being told that titles will often say something about the poem, which challenged me to write a poem with a title that was in conflict with the images in the poem. This way the title would actually be even more crucial to the poem.

This is beautiful. The imagery is superb, and the last stanza really takes the poem to another level. Amazing work. . .
