"Don't tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon"

In a classroom packed with peers she laughs among the chatter
This girl of only fourteen years blends in with all the rest
In a situation this ordinary what could possibly be the matter
She presses her glossed lips together and flips her perfect hair

Her teacher walks slowly to the board plastered to the well worn wall
The petite beauty fails to notice, she has better things to do
And she ignores the woman teaching while the other students stall
The girl smiles bright and tight at the boy in the left corner with eyes of icy blue

Before class starts the teacher has some important news to share
Names are being called; neither the girl’s or blue eyed boy’s
The teens are busy with their pre puppy love they do not seem to care
All of a sudden a noise penetrates miss enticing’s ears

Applause builds and her cheeks grow crimson with shame
Her teacher smiles goofily and the ones labeled ‘nerds’ look to her in shock
The beautiful boy whose attention she once had, fades slowly as he hears her name
Her friends smirk and poke fun deeper than they intend

Golden stars on creamy paper have never been so hated
The boy’s friends scoff and look to him for remarks
He looks down first but joins the mocking, she is no longer to be rated
She thinks of some excuses but none seem to come out

The girl with teary eyes sees outstanding grades in her clammy hands
Something that should maker her proud makes her want to disappear
No more dates will she receive for this she’ll have no more plans
Award time may be over but former teenage popularity sinks lower in her seat

She runs home straight after school running through bushes with scratches
Her so called award will not be placed on the refrigerator today
From a drawer in the kitchen she claws at some matches
She laughs with a rueful heart as the certificate burns to ashes

It is forever gone and will not haunt her any more
The fire stick slips from her grip and lands on her forefinger
She cries out in pain but nobody is there to soothe the burning sore
Too bad the gorgeous boy from class won’t even remember her name

The author's comments:
I was inspired by another ballad published to teen ink. I think it is horrible how some teenagers are ridiculed for being smart. This has happened to me where I felt horrible after receiving praise for excelling in school.

"I live in a world of fantasy so keep your reality away from me. I see what I want; I want what I see and that is all okay by me."

I really liked how you described this, especially how you called a match a fire stick. The poem had a lot of emotion in it and an experience that was very relatable.
