Because a person's a person no matter how small. -Dr Suess

Oh Mirror Mirror tell me what you see.

I see a child, a little girl of three

with eyes so pretty and so very green

but

they've seen what little girls should not have seen.

Oh Mirror Mirror I'm now seventeen.

It's true, my eyes are still that shade of green.

But tell me now, is my makeup on right?

Do I look perfect for my date tonight?

Listen girl, I've told you what I really see.

To me you'll always be that lonely girl of three

with eyes so old and wise they tell a story

of a life so young and yet so melancholy.

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem to show that as we become adults, some of us try to bury our childhood trauma and our vulnerabilities, but in reality, our childhood experiences affect us and cannot be erased.

The Mirror personifies a hidden part of us that recognizes this truth.
