Harper
An eerie quiescence
Suffocating,
Caustic,
Deafening:
Soaking his sinew, surging
Through the fissures of marble-like
Ossein, drowning his very soul—
Harper loathed it.
Harper relished it.
Relished it as fervently as a
Rebellious Wahabi cleric finding
The Sheik’s son and a rabbi’s daughter
Feasting on imported veal and swine.
Loathed it as passionately as the
Indian day laborer sent
To butcher the calves.
Yet, all Harper managed was
What a mute person could do, having
Tasted a saccharine treat:
Smile
